About the Bike Surgeon

Now Open in Shiloh, Illinois, right across the interstate from O’Fallon, IL the Bike Surgeon provides the greater Metro-east area of St. Louis a premier “destination” bike shop, providing the best in service and sales. Voted the best bike shop in southern Illinois for the last five years we are looking to expand on that tradition of excellence in the Metro-east market with the second Bike Surgeon location.

We strive to achieve this goal through many efforts including delivering an unforgettable bike shop experience, continuing to build and maintain an excellent selection of cycling enthusiast bikes and gear. We also reach out into the local community supporting local and regional cycling clubs and groups, helping sponsor and at times coordinate cycling specific events, further the planning and development of additional cycling specific trails and greenways and many other community outreach efforts. Our plans to help us achieve these goals include:

  • Assist with fund-raising and development of new trails
  • Encourage a healthy and fit lifestyle
  • Become the areas premier road racing, triathlon, cyclo-cross, and mountain bike destination shop.
  • Assist in raising “share the road” awareness to help make cycling safer for both cyclists and motorists

History

The “Original” Bike Surgeon was founded in 1974 by Mark Robinson and is still in operation in Carbondale, IL, run by Patrick and Tricia Work. In 2009, Jon Greenstreet and Chris Norrington owners of The Bike Surgeon, Inc. decided to expand the business into the Metro-East area. With the help Tom Jackson (an O’Fallon, IL resident and top regional triathlete), a team was created that brought the second Bike Surgeon location to life in Shiloh, Illinois in July of 2009. Bike Surgeon is owned by a group of friends with a passion for the sport of cycling and a desire to provide an unforgettable bike shop experience.

Meet the Surgeons

The Greenstreets - Jon, Emily, Hugh, Clara, Sydney, Eli
In early 2004, Jon and Emily purchased the bike shop, young, ambitious, and with three children under the age of four. Five years later they now have four children (yes, they’re done!), the business is growing and the second Bike Surgeon location is doing well! We owe a huge thanks to all of our team for this success, thanks guys for everything!!
Having a family and running our own business are not exactly conducive to free time, but we try very hard to get our miles in and achieve balance in my life. This last week we cleaned up the bike for a ride, maybe next week we will actually get to ride it :-).

Chris Norrington
Chris has been involved with the bike industry for 15 years. Add that up folks, he was turning wrenching in a shop before he was 10. He’s the youngest of us owners but the cool part is, he’s forgotten more about bikes than most of us other owners ever knew. He has been with the Surgeon for over four years and was shop manager in Carbondale. Along with the Greenstreet’s he recently relocated from southern Illinois and now call’s O’Fallon home. The other important member of Chris’ family is Echo, the shop dog. Echo is the Siberian husky you have probably met if you have been in the shop and if you haven’t met him yet make sure to say hi to him next time you stop by.

Tom and Kim Jackson
Tom and Kim started their lives together in Carbondale in 1990, the same year that Tom started to race triathlons. Tom even visited the original Bike Surgeon back then. Fast forward 10 years and they moved back to the greater St. Louis area while working with the Illinois Air National Guard. While training for Ironman Triathlons and traveling to St. Louis for all his bike service, Tom explored the idea of opening a bike shop in the metro east to fill an obvious need. Due to his full-time commitment as a pilot in the Air National Guard, he was unable to achieve that goal. When Jon and Chris were looking to open the second shop in early 2009 a mutual friend put us all in touch and before we knew it we were also owners in the newest bike shop in the Metro-east. Tom has completed six Ironman Triathlon World Championships in Hawaii, with a personal best of 9:35 in 2007, and competed in over 25 marathons, with a best of 2:38. Tom is also involved with coaching runners and triathletes locally and nationally.

Mike Arenberg (Coach Mike)
Coach Mike is our first employee at the Shiloh store. He has over 25 years of coaching and cycling experience, Including 15 Ironman Triathlons (three in Kona, Hawaii), and a Furnace Creek 508 finish in 2008. Mike has a Master’s in Exercise Physiology from the University of Colorado, and has worked with some of the most well known coaches in the country. He has coached numerous elite level athletes as well as “back-of-the-packers”.
